Speaking in Tongues
Six distinctive features
You are speaking to God, not to men.
1 Corinthians 14:2
2For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries
You are speaking of the wonderful works of God.
11Cretans and Arabs we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.
You are magnifying God
For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
You are edifying yourself.
1 Corinthians 14:4
4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
You are giving thanks to God.
1 Corinthians 14:17
17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
You are saying that Jesus is Lord.
1 Corinthians 12:3
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus declares the gift of speaking in tongues.
17And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
1When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
